Smart, an orphan who lost both parents at a tender age, found himself under the care of his paternal grandmother, whose unwavering love became his foundation. However, the harsh realities of Zimbabwe’s economic climate left the family grappling with the challenge of survival, let alone education.
Through the community cadres known as the Shamwari Dzedu, Smart’s grandmother got to know of Mavambo Orphan Care (MOC), a local NGO dedicated to supporting orphaned and vulnerable children. The intervention of MOC became a turning point in Smart’s life.

Enrolled in MOC’s accelerated learning program at Mavambo Learning Centre, Smart’s academic journey began to flourish. After a year of intensive literacy and numeracy training, he was successfully integrated into Tashinga Primary School, with MOC providing uniforms, stationery, and tuition. His secondary education at Tafara 1 High School was similarly supported, though he faced a setback after passing only four subjects at the Ordinary Level.
In the face of hardships, Smart demonstrated exceptional resilience by adapting and exploring other avenues. With MOC’s financial backing, he went for a hotel and catering, cookery and cake making course at Herentals College. Today, he is a proud employee of Rainbow Towers, one of the top hotels in the Harare and Zimbabwe.
Smart is thankful to MOC for their life changing support, which has guided him through life’s challenges. Their assistance has not only helped him close the cycle of poverty but also safeguarded him against the destructive allure of drug abuse that has affected lives of many young people in the community.
Reflecting on his journey, Smart expressed profound gratitude to MOC. “Thanks to MOC for all the support without them who knows I might have been involved in drug abuse which is very prevalent especially in the ghetto,’’ he said.
Smart’s life has taken a shift in the positive direction. He now has the financial muscle to take good care of the family, providing for their diverse needs.
